What our trainees do
Let our latest trainees show you some of the amazing things they do on their journey to GROW into future leaders with the Stora Enso Global Trainee Programme.

All of us trainees have the opportunity to go on a 3-month International Assignment. The purpose of this assignment is to see the company from a different aspect, and preferably from a very different view that we have been used in our regular work.

Something very interesting about the trainee group GROW 2016, is the multiculturality.

During the Stora Enso Trainee Programme, I have seen and experienced many different and exciting mills around the world. Back at home at Ingerois Board Mill in Finland, it is hard to appreciate ordinary things that we take for granted. Things can be done in many different ways and in a familiar environment, it is difficult to see new possibilities to approach.

This might be a bit of an early reflection of my international assignment in the US (as I’m only headed home today), but here are some findings I’ve made about myself when facing a new complex situation.

The ability to gather and use insights is one of the most important tools that a person will ever get… except from maybe a brain and a body. But part from the obvious perks of being able to eat, breathe, sleep, think and several other things that make us human, I would argue that insights come at an honourable ranking on the shortlist as a means to help us develop as individuals and teams, in our private life as well as in business.

Last week, Finland's President Sauli Niinistö visited Uruguay for the first time. Because of this historical occasion, the local Embassy of Finland and Uruguayan Nordic Chamber of Commerce arranged a breakfast in Montevideo for companies that advance the economic cooperation between the countries. While I’m doing my three month’s international assignment in Montes del Plata, I got a once-in-a-lifetime chance to join this event with my local Finnish colleagues.

Finally it is time to blog again! I am currently stationed in Imatra, Finland, for a three-week project within Human Resources. It is part of my Trainee International Assignment, which will last for three months and also bring me to places such as Poland and India. I had no previous experience from HR before taking on this project, and saw this as an opportunity to challenge myself as well as to develop and broaden my skills and experience.

As the second week of the trainees' trip to China drew to a close, we had already seen two very different faces of China. Having spent the first week in Shanghai, a 20+ million people city filled with international influences and impressions, where a Starbucks is never far away and the cars actually stop at traffic lights, and then travelled the Guangxi province, on the southern coast of China, where tuk-tuks still flood the streets, hotel staff barely speak English and all sorts of animal body parts are sold as food in the street corners, it was obvious to all trainees that there is not only one China.
